barack obama either couldn't or wouldn't do last week against mitt romney. >> right. professor reich, paul ryan is known for being an encyclopedia of numbers but can he effectively counter headlines like this one today, "gm to add 2,000 jobs in michigan"? if this race comes down to ohio and the auto rescue plays a major role there, that's a tough headline to counter for mr. ryan, isn't it? >> it certainly is. and what people in ohio and in the midwest generally know is the auto bailouts were critically important. ryan and romney said no to the auto bailouts and the president and the vice president said yes in the face of a lot of criticism and they have been proven right. paul ryan is an ideologue. he has a record and joe biden can pick on that record. joe biden can say to paul ryan, that $716 billion that you and romney keep on saying we are robbing from medicare, we are not robbing from medicare. we're actually extending the life of medicare. you, ryan, you use that 7$716 billion in your budget plan and yet you put it in there based upon you actually turning medicare into a voucher

the presidency. you had a prominent conservative writer earlier this week essentially say the only reason, the only excuse possible as to why barack obama could be ahead in the polls is because he's black. i mean, this -- you also had john sununu several months ago say he doesn't understand what it is to be an american, which he tried to backtrack on that again. again andrea mitchell tried to give him a chance to save himself. time and again we have heard these kinds of attacks that, you know what? john sununu should just keep saying it. every time they say it, a further galvanizes our side. if that's what you really think of the president, go ahead and keep saying it because it only helps us. >> karen, finney, professor james piterson, thank you for joining us. next. was mr. romney's performance last night really what women want? stay with us. >> but the right answer is not to have the federal government take over health care and start mandating to the providers across america telling a patient and a doctor what kind of treatment they can have. >> jerry, just remember, it's not a

gregory a couple weeks ago and said i wouldn't repeal everything in obama occasion i would keep popular elements and within 24 hours his aides were saying, not exactly. i find that a little confusing. he has to figure out a way to have a consistent message that is credible and appeals to the swing voters he needs, especially white women. that's his target tonight. >> i think they pull that back -- >> karen, haven't we seen this process throughout this campaign? mr. romney says something, 24 hours later, the campaign goes out and says, he didn't mean that. he meant something else. >> here's the problem, every time romney thinks off the top of his head of something, which is probably why he was practicing zingers, he says something his campaign has to walk back. that's the greatest danger for him in his campaign. the reason they walked back that 17,000 cap comment f you looked at the statement from the campaign very carefully talked about that the president -- that governor romney, no kind of redistributive, you know, idea. i think wealthy people flipped out at the idea because he

. >> reporter: they absolutely are, martin. the obama campaign has been saying for weeks, the romney campaign as well, that they expect this race to get tighter as we get closer to election day so we're essentially seeing that play out in real time. you just mentioned that cnn/orc poll that effectively proves that. a lot of people will say that is because of the debate. mitt romney continues to gain momentum in the wake of the debate. president obama was off to a strong start here in ohio. the unemployment rate lower than the national average. the folks here really like the auto bailout, one out of every eight ohioans has a connection to the auto industry. so a lot of ohioans were expressing support for him, but now obviously things are getting tighter, martin. >> nbc's kristin welker fighting will.i.am very valiantly. thank you very much, kristin. we'll be right back. ♪ this is love, this is love, this is love ♪ [ female announcer ] most whitening strips promise full whitening results in two weeks or more. rembrandt® deeply white™ 2 hour whitening kit is proven to quickly remove surfa
